A month or so ago the internet was all abuzz over the video produced as a preamble to Hillary Clinton’s unveiling of her official campaign song. The song turned out to be a bust—some horrendous twaddle by Celine Dion—but the video announcing it was a clever, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the final scene in the final episode of the HBO series The Sopranos. In spite of the stiff performance and heavy-handed political subtext by the candidate and her husband, the cinematically savvy and timely homage to the dramatic conclusion of one of television’s finest series, earned Hillary big points in my book. Not enough to vote for her though, because I just can’t excuse the lame musical choice. It’s a shame too, because there are some great songs out there that would make a much better choice for an official campaign song. Take this one, for instance, the Happy Medium Song of the Day by The Dollyrots. It’s called “Because I’m Awesome” from the album Eat My Heart Out, and I think it succinctly and memorably sums up the perfect candidate with a one-two punky power-pop punch that would bring votes flooding in. Even Kohls knows a good tune when they hear it. (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
