One of the most famous unknown bands from Australia was a “genre-defying” quartet from Sydney called The Clouds. “Pure pop one moment then dark and broody like a summer storm the next,” the band formed in 1989, and was fronted by Jodi Phillis (remember her last week?) on guitars and vocals and Trish Young on bass and vocals. The rest of the line-up changed a number of times over the next eight years and four LP's, but Phillis and Young remained the driving force behind the band and good friends after the band broke up. So good, in fact, that even though Phillis lives in a small town in Tasmania and Young lives in London, the two managed to (appropriately) “reunite” as Girls From the Clouds in 2005 and release the effervescently poppy EP entitled Lalalala. The five-song EP is chock full of playful harmonies and handclaps, and plenty of la-la-la's. The Happy Medium Song of the Day is called “Beyond the Clouds” and it sounds like the perky theme song from Saturday morning children's show ala H.R. Puffinstuff or The Banana Splits or maybe Josie and the Pussycats if they were real characters in a real band… “The Trish and Jodi” show promises fun and sunshiny harmonies by two women who sound so happy to be singing and playing music together again after all the years and all the miles that you can't help but smile, tap your toes and clap your hands along with them.
