One of my favorite cover tunes from a great, sadly overlooked British band…
This song was originally a big hit for a Scottish band from the '70's called Middle of the Road — a band comprised of a hairdresser, a film cameraman, a sales representative and a chartered surveyor (whatever the hell that is). When Irish director Neil Jordan's latest film, Breakfast on Pluto came out last year it featured a wonderful glam soundtrack and the original version of the song. It's a great tune, but I'm partial to this version — the first version I heard back in 1985 — performed by the British band, Lush. I think the term “shimmering guitars” was penned just to describe Lush's music, and their rendition of this glam classic is given the full shimmering guitar treatment. The Happy Medium Song of the Day is “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep” from the compilation album Alvin Lives (In Leeds).
