Sometimes you arrive too late to the party… I added the Dublin band Otherkin to my music library just last year, like most things these days, by chance. I was searching online for “new” Irish music and their name popped up related to a number of favorable reviews. (What also appears when you google the band is a commendable, and outspoken condemnation of an alleged incident of sexual harassment that took place in the mosh pit at one of their shows). I downloaded the first thing I could find, an ep entitled The 201EP. It did not disappoint. However, what is disappointing is that in my efforts to find additional recordings, I discovered that the band broke up in 2019 — after a popular and successful seven-year run! The announcement—that apparently came as quite a shock to Irish music fans who saw nothing but a young band on a fiery upward trajectory—appears on the band’s website and it really makes you realize not how hard it is to succeed in the music business, but how hard it is to survive. Wow. How did these guys fly— no, soar so completely under my musical radar fo so long? I’m not sure, but allow the Happy Medium Song of the Day to put them on your musical radar with the perfectly peppy weekend-appropriate song “Feel It.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
