Ten minutes after Sean Crowley—the lead singer/guitarist in The Hall Monitors—had collapsed in a sweaty heap on the floor and the curtains were yanked shut, and five minutes after the go-go-girls had danced and frugged their way through a couple of classic British Invasion tunes, it was time for the second band of the night on the stage of the Black Cat. Before they even played a note I thought, “I'm gonna hate this band.” I don't know why. Maybe the organ player seemed disingenuously zealous. Maybe the guitar player looked like a left-over from a bad '80's “hair band.” Maybe the bleach-blond female lead singer wearing fingerless gloves and too much makeup reminded me of a bad John Hughes movie. Maybe it's a good thing I ignored my initial, close-minded reaction to how the band looked, and just enjoyed how they sounded. After listening to their blistering 40 minute set, it's no wonder this band from Sommerville, Massachusetts has the #1 album of 2006 on Little Steven's syndicated underground garage radio show. It's also no surprise that I can't get this song out of my head. The snappy beat. The call-and-response harmonies. The crunching organ chords. Phew! The Happy Medium Song of the Day is “Gimme That Shot” by The Charms and you can find it on their album Pussycat. Never, ever judge a book by it's cover silly boy… (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
