Aberfeldy is a small market town located in the heart of Scotland in Highland Perthshire with a population of around 2000. It’s also home of the Aberfeldy Distillery; makers of fine single malt Scotch whiskey.
It’s also the name of a terrific band from Edinburgh who have released two excellent albums full of cleverly crafted pop music and are on the verge of releasing a third. Today’s Happy Medium Song of the Day by Aberfeldy comes from the band’s 2004 debut, Young Forever, and it’s called “Heliopolis By Night.” Depending on who you ask, Heliopolis, is either an ancient city in Egypt, a suburb of modern Cairo, a fictitious territory in a sci-fi anime series, a fictitious planet on a sci-fi television series, or a dystopian novel by Ernst Jünger. I have no idea which one Riley Briggs and his band are singing about — but when a song has this many “la-la-la’s” in it, the title simply becomes a catchy rhythmic sound and its literal significance doesn’t really matter. We need this band in the backyard pronto!
