In the past, I've spent the month of March spotlighting Irish music old and new. It’s always been the perfect way for me to fine-tune my Irish playlist for our annual St. Patrick's Day Party, and then keep the celebration going for a few more days after the last pint of Guinness has been poured. At this point, I have enough Irish tunes to cover a party that lasts 4.5 days! According to my friend Cathie, we may need every second of that playlist in 2022 because "We're just going to have to party twice as hard and twice as long to make up for 2021!"
In the meantime, I think the music gods looked down through the gray overcast skies that blanketed Kensington on the 17th, and when they saw no party prep taking place for the first time in 22 years, they knew I could use some cheering up in the form of new music from Ireland. After releasing a slew of excellent singles—each one a tribute to the band's growing confidence and musicianship, Inhaler chose St. Patrick's Day to announce the July release of their debut album It Won't Always Be Like This; a title that sounds like the mantra of a young band itching to go on tour and conquer a COVID-free world. A few songs have already been set loose to pave the way for the full album's arrival this summer. Like the non-album singles before them, the new songs are the work of a young band that has masterfully distilled a kaleidoscope of influences into an exciting sound that is uniquely their own, yet has a slight whiff of familiarity to hang on to.
I've been following Inhaler every step of the way and I think they're great. I featured their first single in 2018, and three years later on a day without a party, but not without a soundtrack, their latest single, "Cheer Up Baby" is the Happy Medium Song of the Day. Breathe deep. Shamrock n' roll is alive and well.
