Big sunglasses. Pouty red lips. Fishnet stockings. Teased up hair. Snotty attitude. Short skirts. Tight jeans. Leather jackets. And lots of cleavage. If that’s all the band Les Hell on Heels had going for them, they’d be nothing more than super vixens looking for a chance to star in a bad b-movie. (Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with that Mr. Meyers) Instead, these gals from Phoenix have snarly vocals, thumping beats, and an irresistible gurl-group garage sound that’s not only reminiscent of bands like The Runaways but also brings to mind a less wholesome version of The Shangri-Las. Throw in a dash of the psychedelic Nuggets sound with a pinch of British Invasion and you see why they are favored darlings on Little Steven’s Underground Garage.
“I’ll Come Runnin’” turned up on my friend David’s year-end, double disc set: The Thoughtless Amalgamation 2007, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for his “thoughtlessness” (not to mention his sarcastic sense of humor). The discs feature a total of 43 kick-ass songs: 22 on the “Domestic” disc and 21 on the “Imported” disc. Many of the bands I had only heard of, but had not heard anything by them. Picking a favorite—to spotlight on The Happy Medium Song of the Day—was kind of like shooting fish in a barrel, but I’m a sucker for girls with attitude and guitars. Thanks, David. I hope you put as little thought into creating a mix next year for my listening pleasure.
