My nephew Connell has good taste in music and I am grateful for the time he takes to share it with me—especially since he is attuned to a completely different frequency than me. One time his recommendation arrived in the mail in the form of beautifully packaged LP on multi-colored vinyl that would look just as nice hanging on my wall as it does spinning on my turntable. Another time the mailman fired a homemade compilation CD through the mail slot. A CD full of meticulously chosen cuts and designed with personalized artwork. And every once in a while Connell’s recommendations just pop up on my iPhone as a random text: “Hey Uncle John, I think you’d really like these guys!” Music is a good bond to have with someone — especially someone separated from you by multiple state lines.
White Reaper is a band from Louisville, Kentucky that boasts sounds that harken back to a melodic power-punk era of which I am particularly fond. Pitchfork calls it “bouncy pop-punk, fully of stuffy-nosed sneers and bubblegum-blowing vowels.” That means there’s a touch of American punk (like The Ramones and The Dickies), a touch of UK punk (like The Buzzcocks and The Damned), a touch of rock (like Cheap Trick and The Cars), a touch of power punk (like American Hi-Fi and MXPX) and a whole lot of self deprecating humor that keeps the band sounding fresh and fun. I mean, c’mon… their debut album is titled The World’s Best American Band, and my selection off it for The Happy Medium Song of the Day is a three and a half minute gem called “Judy French.” Rock on nephew! Keep ‘em coming. (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
