When it comes to famous song writing duos, most people have heard of:
Jagger / Richards…
McCartney / Lennon…
Holland / Dozier / Holland…
Elton John / Bernie Taupin…
Leiber / Stoller…
Goffin / King…
Bacharach / David…
Strummer / Jones…
Bono / The Edge…
But over the weekend, the world of music lost half of one of the best song writing teams never known: McLennan / Forster. Back in the late 70's, along with Robert Forster, Grant McLennan formed one of Australia's most preeminent and influential bands, The Go-Betweens. McLennan died of a heart attack in his sleep Saturday night. He was 48. In addition to The Go-Betweens, McLennan released an impressive amount of solo material and was involved in a number of interesting side projects with musicians like Stephen Kilbey of The Church and Ian Hoag of Powderfinger. McLennan had an uncanny ability to write catchy, witty, literate songs. I'm sad to have lost one of my favorite musicians, and I hate these unwelcome reminders of our mortality, so I'm going to spend the week playing tribute to the music of one of Australia's best kept secrets: Grant McLennan. To begin…The Happy Medium Song of the Day features the first single ever released by The Go-Betweens, 28 years ago this month, and it's called “Lee Remick.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
