It does my heart good to see artists like Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins selling out the 9:30 Club on a Sunday afternoon… but man does it piss me off too! I mean there was a time when an odd act like this would blow through town with nary a word and you could enjoy it with about 100 other people and then go tell all your friends like you were some music hot shot with your finger on the pulse of all that's cool and hip and sexy in cross-over alt-country pop music. Not any more. It's bad enough that Jenny's real band, Rilo Kiley is more or less untouchable when they come to town, but a solo performance with the Watson twins? C'mon! Side projects aren't supposed to sell out. OK, well, maybe if they're as good as this one, they should. And, I suppose, so should Rilo Kiley too. Why the hell should a good band have to “pay its dues?” I saw three bands paying their dues last week and it wasn't pretty: lugging gear, enduring a crappy sound board in a strangely configured club, negotiating for chips at the bar… No thanks.
Jenny Lewis is a singer and a songwriter from Los Angeles, California. According to her website, she’s got hair the color of a Pacific sunset, a voice as sweet as an ice cream cone, and a wit sharper than a razorblade. Most days (and nights) you can find Jenny Lewis singing and playing with Rilo Kiley. Currently she's left the boys behind and she's on the road supporting her solo album Rabbit Fur Coat with Chandra and Leigh Watson. Sunday was the second time this show's been to town and the second time I've missed it. That will teach me to wait until the last minute to buy tickets again…
