When I was a kid I used to lay on the floor in front of the big RCA stereo that took up an entire wall in our living room, and listen to my parents’ records. All kinds. Broadway show tunes, Sinatra, Mathis, Glen Campbell, Bill Cosby, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, and John Barry’s soundtrack music for all the James Bond movies that had been released. I was also a big fan of one of the soundtrack music created by Herb Alpert and his band did for the spoof of Casino Royale — a silly movie with great theme music. Both that record, and Whip Cream and Other Delights, were also amongst my favorite pre-adolescent record covers. Dave Pirner’s too, I guess, since his band Soul Asylum created a parody of it for the cover of their 1988 A&M Records release Clam Dip and Other Delights. Some say Herb (the “A” in A&M) was not happy with the band’s debut release on his label and didn’t appreciate the humor. I, however, think it’s genius—like most of the band’s music. I also think the time is ripe for Soul Asylum to demonstrate they were no fluke by releasing a new, kick-ass collection of tunes and take ‘em on the road. C’mon Barack, they rocked the White House once before. Give ‘em a call because sometimes you just can’t beat no frills rock n’ roll.
