Besides listening to old cassettes, my car stereo’s cold-weather fickleness is also a great excuse to catch up on all the podcasts I subscribe to and load onto my iPod. One that I enjoy in particular comes from London and it’s called Not Your Usual Bollocks. The podcast’s “tag line” is: “because mainstream radio is shit.” Ain’t that the truth?
Typically the show runs the gamut of every kind of music imaginable with a bare bones commentary about what you’re hearing. The way radio should be. I enjoy the NYUB podcast because I am always pleasantly surprised. Surprised either by something brand new I’ve never heard before because it has yet to wash up on these shores, or surprised by songs I missed the first time around, or surprised by the context in which songs I know are presented.
I heard this track on NYUB #10 while driving up past Baltimore this past weekend to pick up a new CD cabinet — an adventure in itself — and I couldn’t believe I was hearing it for the first time. It never ceases to amaze me what falls between the cracks.
The Happy Medium Song of the Day is “Old Shit, New Shit” by Eels. It comes from their three year-old
Blinking Lights and Other Revelations album. (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
