Just when you think you’ve seen it all and rock n’ roll has nothing new to say, along comes a band like KOLARS with Rob Kolars on guitar and pompadour and the sequined Lauren Brown on drums.
Literally.
She plays three drums and a cymbal while standing on a kick drum wearing tap shoes — none of which means a thing if the music is crap… But the music is fantastic and the band performs it energetically at full throttle. Imagine all the poppy shockabilly glam of the Rezillos distilled down to two flamboyant musicians with a disco sensibility and a penchant for creating music that "takes your heart by the hand and leads you to the dance floor, daring you to not feel motivated to dance, shimmy, and just escape the mundane."
I caught the band’s performance at DC9 a month ago and it was one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time. Watching Lauren perform was absolutely exhausting — and her aerobic percussive “workout” was more than just a gimmick. It propelled the band through an unforgettable set of music that left the audience yelling for more even as the sweat dripped off her body as she stood atop her bass drum, inches away from the stage lights mounted in the ceiling.
David if you’re reading this, let’s figure out a way to get you back to DC the next time KOLARS swings through on tour. It’s an easy set-up: one mic for Rob to sing into and one for Lauren’s feet. Today’s Happy Medium Song of the Day is “One More Thrill” from KOLARS self-named debut. (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
