Fourteen days ago I had this grand plan to spend the month of February dedicating the Happy Medium Song of the Day exclusively to some of my favorite tunes about hearts and love and valentines…eros and cupid and lust… But here we are midway through the month — already Valentine's day in fact — and romance has been the furthest thing from this self-proclaimed romantic's mind. It seemed like every time I tried to write, I got sidetracked and waylaid; mostly by the pervasive and oppressive pall of bullshit emanating from the White House and Capitol Hill on an hourly basis. It winds me up and drags me down. I’ll admit, sometimes I find it a struggle not to let the political climate cloud my generally sunny disposition — especially when the forecast this month seems to call for nothing but overcast skies and rain. I don’t want to be consumed by the abounding injustice, corruption, ineptitude, and downright stupidity that runs rampant and amuck these days. I don't want to be discouraged by intolerance, indifference and inarticulacy. I don’t want to be disheartened, especially not in February. Not in the month of love. In fact, I heartily refuse.
In a recent interview in The Sun magazine (a periodical that provides me with a perpetual ray of hope and illuminated thoughtfulness), the outspoken American philosopher and political activist Cornel West said, “Love, too, is a virtue. No matter how much hatred you see in the world, and no matter how much you want to feel hatred in your heart, you should know that the standard is still love. You might feel yourself succumbing to hatred, but as long as you know what the standard is, you’ll know you’re wrong. Once you give up on the standard, we’re all in deep trouble.”
Friends, let’s avoid "deep trouble" at all costs and, in accordance with the Happy Medium Song of the Day which was originally recorded in 1969 by Jackie DeShannon and covered here by musical lovebirds Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” this Valentine’s day. Before it's too late.
