Shortly after Songs From the Film came out, Tommy Keene released his third EP--Run Now—and it was the sound of a band headed down the runway full throttle, teasing fans and critics alike with great expectations. Perhaps the biggest indication that Tommy’s star was truly on the rise—besides a half dozen excellent songs that resonated with college radio and MTV—was getting tapped to perform the title track (for about 15 seconds) on camera, in a forgettable post-Brat Pack movie starring Anthony Michael Hall called Out of Bounds. Of course the spinning Geffen logo on the label and the A-level producers involved with the release: Don Dixon, T-Bone Burnett and Bob Clearmountain didn’t hurt either. For better or for worse, the Run Now ep also marked the last time Tommy would play with original bandmates Ted Nicely (bass), Billy Connelly (guitar) and Doug Tull (drums).

Geffen included five of the six tracks from Run Now on the re-issue of Songs From the Film. The sixth song, a blistering live recording of Lou Reed’s “Kill Your Sons,” inexplicably did not make the cut. That omission makes the vinyl today’s song comes from all the more valuable — at least to me. From track 1 on side 1 the Happy Medium Song of the Day is the title track, “Run Now.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
