Perhaps one of the best bands that never was, The Stone Roses are “a spectacular example of poorly programmed and self-defeating chaos.” Following their debut in 1985, the band released a grand total of two albums in ten years. Although they played a major role in the late 80's Madchester rave scene, numerous legal battles with their record label prevented them from ever making it big in the US. For the most part, all their records—not just the many compilations issued by their feuding label, Silvertone—sound like greatest hits packages. Weaving your way through all the re-releases and re-issues and greatest hits, etc. can be exhausting, but rewarding. Today's song, for example, first appeared as a 12” single. It was inexplicably left off the band's debut—which was great for driving up the collector's value of my record, but lousy for fans hoping to purchase a comprehensive collection of the band's songs to date. The song showed up later on The Very Best of the Stone Roses CD. So here, without all the clicks and pops of well-worn vinyl is The Happy Medium Song of the Day: “Sally Cinnamon.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
