We got our first heavy spring shower this evening. The kind of storm where the sky darkens quickly like a theatre before the film starts. Lightning skitters across the sky and then illuminates the neighborhood like one huge paparazzi flashbulb. The rain comes down hard and fast. I'm grateful not to be on the road driving in it because it's the kind of deluge that windshield wipers have a hard time keeping pace with even at their fastest setting. At times it seems like the weather is nothing but inconvenient, inconsiderate and indifferent. “It always rains on my parade.” “Looks like we're in for stormy weather.” “When it rains, it pours,” etc.
Today's weather reminded me of a song with a different attitude towards the rain. A song that acknowledges what a pain in the ass the rain can be, but at the same time, celebrates all the good that it can do too. The Happy Medium Song of the Day is “She Comes From the Rain,” a little psychedelic pop ditty by one of my favorite English bands, The Weather Prophets. It's from the near-perfect LP, Mayflower which was produced by the very same Lenny Kaye who played with Patti Smith and had a key role in putting together the indispensable Nuggets compilation.
