He’s kind of pudgy. He’s got a bad haircut. He dances like a spazz, and he spells his name without the letter “h.” An unlikely rock n’ roll star? Perhaps. But anyone who obviously hates American Idle as much as I do, and pens a catchy pop gem about it fueled with disdain, vitriol and humor, is A-OK in my book.
Jonny Dongel hails from England, but currently calls New York his home. His debut album, A Fifth of Nowhere was just released last month. He performs “attitude fueled punky anthems full of spiky guitars, infectious vocals, playful lyrics, sing-a-long melodies, and the kind of drums that make you want to jump around like a loon.” In other words, a modern-day Wreckless Eric. With songs about pirate radio stations (“Radio Caroline”), sex (“Snocker Snog & Shag”), and “birds” (“Penelope Jane”), Jonny is a wonderful throw-back to a British musical style and sound that has always been near and dear to my heart. “Sorry Simon” is an instantly memorable tune of little consequence, but damn, it sounds like a hit to me, and that’s why it’s today’s Happy Medium Song of the Day.
