Some people will argue that punk music really, really, really started in Brisbane, Australia when The Saints released “(I’m) Stranded” in 1976.
It’s hard to say—and I don’t feel like arguing. As great as that internationally acclaimed punk anthem is, my introduction to the band came ten years, and several reincarnations later with the release of All Fools Day, a much more polished, but no less raucous collection of tunes that adhered to the punk ethos in spirit while searching for a more refined musical accompaniment. In turn, that album lead me to The Saints back-catalogue and then diverged into guitarist Ed Kuepper’s prodigious solo library, and a whole world of unexplored Australian pop music. Phew! What a fabulous musical journey. Definitely more to come from that vein…
