So now there's runners on first and second and it's up to the evening's third band, The Chesterfield Kings, to load up the bases. Hailing from Rochester, New York, The Chesterfield Kings have actually been releasing albums since the early '80's with a sound clearly rooted in guitar rock and garage punk; merseybeat and sneery trash. Sunday night the band was in excellent form, ripping through a scorching set of tunes reminiscent of the Yardbirds, early Rolling Stones, and pretty much anything off the indispensable Nuggets and Children of Nuggets compilations. Beatle boots, granny glasses, a John Lennon cap, and a teardrop-shaped Vox guitar all contributed to the overall look and sound of a band that is stuck in some sort of retro-psychedelic musical time warp without, amazingly, being stuck creatively. How can music this dated still sound like a breath of fresh air? The Happy Medium Song of the Day is from the album The Mindbending Sounds of The Chesterfield Kings and it's called “Trip Through Tomorrow.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
