It goes without saying…
Beer should be ice cold. Beef should be rare. Whiskey should be neat. Air conditioning should be unnecessary. Kisses should be sweet. Waitresses should be sassy. Coffee should be strong. Amplifiers should go to 11. The weekend should start sooner and last longer. Slade is at their best when they rock out.

Fast forward six years after the release of Flame —
- past the band’s efforts to crack the US market with Nobody’s Fool; a worthy experiment with an American soul and west coast pop sound that won a few new fans in the US, but alienated followers back in the UK and became the first Slade album not to reach the UK Top 10. |
- past the grungy, underrated Whatever Happened to Slade, a title that ironically acknowledged the band’s waning popularity and musical irrelevance in the midst of late 70’s punk rock, but in later years would prove to be a highly coveted collector’s item praised and name-checked by many of the punk rockers whose own music had buried it.

Fast forward through all that to 1981 and the release of Slade’s ninth studio album and (yet another) Top Ten single both appropriately titled We’ll Bring the House Down. This is the Slade I finally got to see while going to school in England my junior year at the University of Exeter. How appropriate that they would be experiencing a resurgence in popularity the year I was living in England.
It goes without saying if this Happy Medium Song of the Day doesn’t get your weekend jump started, nothing will. So turn up the volume, roll down the windows, and sing along with Slade until the house falls down around you. The weekend really should be longer… (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
