Today's Happy Medium Song of the Day is a late entry because we went out to see Amy Rigby and Marti Jones in concert tonight. And while it would have been appropriate to choose a favorite song by one of them, I'm going to save that selection for another time… Maybe after we convince them to play a backyard concert on Druid Drive…
Rock n' roll is full of wonderful surprises, and tonight's show was no exception. The gals' opening act was none other than Eric Goulden — better known as Wreckless Eric; one of the original Stiff Records recording artists along with Ian Dury and Elvis Costello. Actually, Eric's presence tonight wasn't a complete surprise. The last time we saw Amy she had a full band with her, and the first ass-kicking encore she performed was one of Eric's songs. Well, not just “one of his songs,” actually it was the song, the one he's really known for: “Whole Wide World.” I don't need to reiterate my thoughts on cover tunes — suffice it to say that I was pleasantly surprised and duly impressed with Amy's decision to play a little known song by one of my favorite one-hit wonders. Well, tonight Amy and Marti definitely trumped that encore by actually sharing the stage with Eric, who performed the song himself. It was brilliant and shambly and a rare, unexpected treat to hear those familiar chugging chords and heavy English accent — not to mention the rousing foot-stomping chorus. If only Amy had accompanied him on tambourine and Marti on handclaps… “Every record's a memory” Eric stated between songs amidst mild bewilderment and light heckling. Indeed, every record's a memory.
