It's too bad more people didn't have the chance to experience the music of Grant McLennan and The Go-Betweens while he was still alive and kicking. It's too bad that it looks like fame will be kinder to him now that he's dead. It's too bad that five days doesn't begin to capture his superb career. A career that has spanned 25 years and 15 albums. It's too bad, that sometimes an artist has to die before he can achieve critical acclaim. And yet, what little I know of Grant McLennan from what I've read and what I've heard, I don't think he'd want me feeling sorry for him now. I think he'd point out the positive things like spending a lifetime writing and recording music with his best friend. Touching people's lives through the melancholic beauty of his songs, their hearts and minds through the poetry of his words, and their hips and feet through the rhythm of his music. Grant McLennan leaves behind a substantial musical legacy — a legacy cut short due to no fault of his own… but afterall, as he sings on his solo album, Watershed, “you can't have everything.” The Happy Medium Song of the Day, and the final installment in my Grant McLennan tribute, is “You Can't Have Everything.” (Please use the comments box to share your thoughts.)
