I bought this single years ago when it first came out simply because I liked the name of the band. I was also intrigued by any band that would release a double 45 with a gatefold sleeve — something I had never seen before. I was a little leery at the prospect of paying for one good song and getting three bad b-sides in the deal, but there wasn’t a dud in the bunch. “Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)” is a brilliant pop song that is full of shimmering guitars, a hook-laden chorus and a thumping, Burundi drum-like beat. For me, it succinctly captures all the elements of post-punk new wave that I love. So much of that music was mediocre — but there were a few gems and this one, by The Icicle Works, was one of them. That’s why it’s the Happy Medium Song of the Day.
