Back in 1985 I picked up a 12” EP by a British post-punk band called The Wild Flowers. I have no idea what drew my attention to the EP other than the simple artwork printed on a rough cardboard sleeve. 1985 was definitely the heyday of my vinyl record buying; when I was willing to take chances on new music with nothing more to go on than the unusual texture of the album cover. Based on the band’s name, my discovery probably came towards the end of a long, alphabetically systematic visit to Yesterday and Today Records with the payoff occurring in the “W” section some where between The Who and Wire Train.
What’s interesting is that 35 years later I still remember it wasn’t even the lead song that immediately grabbed my attention when the needle hit the vinyl. It was actually the last song— I guess patience does pay off and some things are worth waiting for. I need to remind myself of that on a daily basis.
The Happy Medium Song of the Day is “Core of My Heart” by The Wild Flowers. You can still pick it up on vinyl or cassette (!) from Amazon, but once again it looks like I’ve managed to stump iTunes.
