It’s February, the month of love, and the countdown to Valentine’s Day is on…
Before he was dazzled and inspired on April 3, 1976 by a little-known support band called the Sex Pistols, John Graham Mellor played guitar and sang in a London pub band called The 101ers. The band was named after the squat where they all lived together at 101 Walterton Road, and it’s best known for all the other bands its members went on to form (The Passions, The Derelicts, Basement 5, The Raincoats, Public Image Ltd., and The Clash) rather than the sum of its own output: two singles and a posthumous, hodge-podge compilation of live recordings and other songs. In fact, by the time The 101ers first single, “Keys to Your Heart,” was released in 1976, John Graham Mellor had changed his name to Joe Strummer, and The Clash were well on their way to becoming “the only band that matters.” Nevertheless, “Keys to Your Heart” is a brilliant song that deserves a soft, red spotlight of attention, which is why it is The Happy Medium Song of the Day.
